Removing Wood Fired Pizza Stone Stains

After a long time, food residue such as pizza ingredients, cheese or oils drip on the pizza stone and causes staining from those types of burnt food. In my experience, these are very easy to remove by simply baking them off. All you need to do is wipe off your pizza stone with a soft cloth to remove the debris that can be brushed off.

Next, light your pizza oven and place the stone inside.

Allow the oven to heat up to close to maximum heat. The heat from the oven will actually burn away the stain.

If there are stubborn grease stains that are difficult to remove completely. However, with the help of some baking soda and hot water, you can remove most burnt pizza stone stains from your pizza stone.

Simply mix a 1:1 ratio of warm water and baking soda. I usually use 1 tablespoon of each. Put it on a damp rag and scrub the stains away using a circular motion. After you are done scrubbing your pizza stone, dry the area with a dry cloth and let the stone dry completely after cleaning before using it to cook pizza again.

Do You Need To Clean Your Ooni Pizza Stone?

Why Should You Clean Your Pizza Stone Grill Regularly

Over time, your wood fired pizza stone can get clogged with excess grease and oils that make your pizza taste less than delicious. By cleaning your pizza stone regularly after each meal, you can keep it free of unnecessary buildup and have your pizza cooked to perfection.

Food particles and residue also tends to stick to the surface of your oven stones. Leaving it unclean for too long could shorten its lifespan, which may eventually need to be replaced.

How Often Should You Clean Your Outdoor Oven’s Pizza Stone – Between Pizzas?

For best results, I always recommend cleaning your Ooni baking stones after each cooking session. However, if you’re prepping your pizza stone for multiple uses, you can just brush off any food debris in between pizzas. Once this is done, then you’re good to go for a couple of delicious pizzas!

Can You Wash Or Rinse A Pizza Stone With Water And Dish Soap?

No. Water can damage your oven stone and cause you to be shopping on Amazon for a new one.

Some people wonder if they can wash a pizza baking stone in hot water. I’ve heard of some new Ooni customers doing this and other methods such as microwaving the stone to clean it. I would discourage anyone from doing that. The stone essentially is made to withstand high temperatures, so you should follow the steps listed above to get it properly clean. In my opinion, there’s no need to wash it with soapy water or any other liquids, soap, or detergent products from your kitchen.

However, if you need to use a little water, the most important thing is not submerging it in soapy water. Wiping with a damp cloth is okay, though. Make sure that any moisture is dry before the next time you cook pizza on your hot pizza stone.
